The earliest records of the Daly family in Ireland was in the region of what is now County Westmeath where Cuchonnacht O'Dalaigh resided. He died in 1139 AD.

The ancestral clan was called Corca Adaimh and they claimed descent from a son of Niall of the Nine Hostages, (High King of Ireland, 380 – 405 AD).

The surname Daly is among the most widely found in Ireland.  It is an anglicised form of the old gaelic name "Ó'Dálaigh" derived from Dálach meaning 'one who is present at assemblies' or more commonly called Councillor or Assembly person nowadays.  The root word is Dáil, which is the official title of the Irish Parliament, called “Dáil Eireann”.

The modern Irish surnames O'Daly, Daly, Daley, Daily, Dailey, Ua Dálaigh and Dawley are derived from Ó Dálaigh.

In 1911 in Ireland we find 14,097 of the Daly surname.  Mary was the most common first name used and further information can be viewed down this page.

Again in the Brien surname we find 12,818 occurrences in Ireland in 1911 and that there too Mary was the most frequently occurring first name with 1,504 occurrences (11.7%) in 1911. There is additional info down this page.

Some families were beginning to add the O' as in O'Brien, etc to the surname and we find too that the O'Brien name was very popular in 1911 and there was a total of 24,518 occurrences of that surname.  Again Mary was the most popular first name with a frequency of 2,897 occurrences or 11.8% of the total O'Brien first names.  Similarly we see more data down this page.

Drimoleague RC Parish records do not cover the time period of the birth of John Daly and Catherine Brien so therefore we do not have their birth dates, and guessing is misleading.

John Daly and Catherine (Kate) Brien were married on 3rd March 1835 in Old Chapel, Drimoleague, Co. Cork.  (copy of their Marriage Certificate shown below).

Copy of Register entry for Marriage of John Daly & Catherine Brien

John and family lived in Garranes North which is the townland immediately to the East of Castledonovan where the O'Donovan Castle stands.  The broad area covering a few townlands is often referred to as Castledonovan so hence we find the address for the childern in the Baptism Register as Castledonovan.

They had the following children (all baptised on dates below in Drimoleague):-

Julian, 7 July 1837.  Sponsors: Timothy Brien, Joan Daly
